Port Royal was founded by retired advertising executive John Glen Sample in 1938. His ambition was to make Port Royal the finest place in the world to live. Sample purchased two square miles of land and deemed it Port Royal. His fascination with pirate lore and a visit to Jamaica inspired the developments name. In 1950, Cutlass Cove is the first phase of Port Royal, complete with lots selling for $7500 - $12,000. In 1951, groundbreaking began of the Trinity by the Cove Episcopal Church built in Port Royal on land donated by John Glen Sample. In 1957, the final phase of the original development of Port Royal is finished boasting a total of 600 lots.
